Volume I [No.2]

Artists Under My Spotlight
---------------------------------------------
I. MGMT

I know it is hard to imagine a band teaching you lessons or helping you grow as a being on this earth, but MGMT has done just that for me . I have developed and matured as a person in part from this band . Their music is so indulgent and full of life that it has made me bloom and flourish as a being of creativity. When I listen to their music a chord is struck deep inside my core and I am brought back up to a high vibration frequency and energy level .
Apart from the music they create, their human nature is something that I feel very nostalgic about, which makes me love them even more . Their easy-going nature consists of simple values, passionate beliefs and profound contemplations, all of which are reflected in their music .
It isn't only that I have a deep appreciation for their music, but a greater appreciation for all music, because I have proof that when it is great, it is truly magnificent .

II. Lady of the Sunshine

The best songs to fall asleep to are those smooth acoustic numbers that follow the slowing pace of your breath, the calming of your heart and the clearing of your head . The lyrics are daydreamy and the vocals are effortless, yet powerful and strong . Angus Stone achieves this best . His voice is as smooth as honey, yet so full of emotion . He evokes passion in every utterance and his lyrics convey a beautiful story .
Brightest of the Bright In My Eyes : Jack Nimble, Kings Black Magic & Silver Revolver

III. Tame Impala

One word: Psychedelic . These Aussie lads have created some of the finest psychedelic rock ballads to ever exist . Their songs alter your state of mind so incredibly so, transporting you to true psychedelia . If a kaleidoscope were to exist in musical form - these songs would be it . Every note and lyric is a change of shape, a change of matter and a change of state . These songs connect everything that is magical and bewitching about nature to your ears, your soul and your heart . When in need of a lighter perspective and a humble attitude - let their music enter your mind  and proceed to float away from reality . In their own words; they make "psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock music. It's intended for moving one's body to, and it's intended for keeping still and observing other forms of movement. It's bombastic but it's swirling, think of the shoulder bones of a giant striding feline creature through some kind of tunnel."

IV. Bon Iver

These songs are more melancholy than those offered by Angus Stone, and a tad eerie . Justin Vernon's voice is more shaky and raw, though still just as beautiful and heart-wrenching . Perhaps even more so, because it is not effortless as Angus's voice . These are songs to nurture and devote divided attention and thought into, because they pull emotion from you as they simutaneously tug on your heart strings . Bon Iver reminds me a little of Elliot Smith, though the music is not nearly as soothing and tranquil . The songs are of depth; are coarse and rough and raw and have ghostly features . They are a perfect backdrop to a rainy, sad day of heavy contemplation .
Brightest of the Bright In My Eyes : Skinny Love, Beach Baby & Flume

V. Pinback

Where to begin ... this band is quite complex and I listen to their music for various purposes . Some of their songs are somewhat 'dark' and I tend to listen to them if I am feeling rather low and sulky . You know those moods ... where all you want to do is listen to the songs that compliment your state of mind until you finally snap out of it ? Then there are other songs which have a lighter note, though still mildly somber . I like to listen to these ones when I am just feeling kind of mellow and am in no specific state of mind .
Brightest of the Bright In My Eyes : Boo, Fortress & Loro

VI. Modest Mouse

I have much sentiment around this band and their music, it has been with me longer than any others, and got me through my adolescence . Isaac Brock has a voice unlike any other, it is distinct and unique, and manages to be full of anguish without being raised . I tend to listen to this band most when I am feeling angry or annoyed with the people around me . That or when I am dazed or upset . I can always rely on this music to get me over my anger, my annoyance or my sadness . The lyrics are kind of fascinating to me, as they are rather ambiguous and cryptic in a sense . I love the complex nature of the lyrics, with the combination of the instruments and Isaac's voice .

VII. Beach House

Light, dreamy and synthezing ballads, soothing and mellow . Like a soft wind that warmly blows by, or the lingering scent of perfume which hangs in the air, this band is simple and enchanting . Delightful and mesmerizing, their songs are perfect to fall serenely asleep to, or while dreamily dazing out under the sunshine . The songs are hopeful, bright and in a some ways, slightly romantic .
Brightest of the Bright In My Eyes : Master of None, Childhood & Zebra

----------------------------------------------
VIII. Beach Fossils

This band is just plain cool . Their music appeals to me because it is fun to play, without being overly active and thus limited to only happy moods . I love the texture of the dulled voices against the uplifting spirit of the songs . I feel better while listening to their music, and am somehow made more content after listening .  Their music is amusing and pleasant in a simple kind of way . It will transform your mood from bad to better in a discreet kind of way . The moderate and subdued rythym hides the happy-go-lucky lyrics and mellow tempo, before you know it you are feeling a little bit better about it all .
Brightest of the Bright In My Eyes :  Golden Age, 12 Roses & Youth

IX. Local Natives

Another fun band but with more spunk than the former, Local Natives offer funky and layered jams . I discovered this band in the summer so their music is a constant reminder of warm weather, bright sun, and endless highway . But nonetheless they are very useful to become upbeat at the start of each day . Their songs are easily enjoyable, catchy and lively . The rythym and beat of their songs are of an optomistic nature, while the lyrics offer a bit of insight . The music is lighthearted and cheerful and served best with sunlight .
